Labour names shadow minister for AI and IP

MP for Reading East takes on role following Keir Starmer’s cabinet reshuffle | The role works closely with shadow secretary of state for science, innovation and technology, Peter Kyle.

Parliament member for Reading East, Matt Rodda, has been appointed as the new shadow minister for AI and IP.

This comes after the UK Labour Party’s recent shadow cabinet reshuffle, marking the fifth set of changes in Keir Starmer’s leadership.

The position involves examining government policies related to AI and IP, including copyright law and the protection of ideas and inventions for individuals and employers.

He will work closely with the shadow secretary of state for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle.

Rodda was “thrilled” to be asked by Starmer to take on the new position after two-and-a-half years as Labour’s shadow minister for pensions.

“This new role will work with Labour’s Science, Innovation and Technology team to think about how we use AI as a society and how we protect IP.

“The development of AI is fast paced and will have a huge impact on how we all live and work and I am really excited to get started,” said Rodda.

Rodda was elected as the member of parliament for the Reading East constituency in June 2017.

Before becoming an MP, he was a councillor with Reading Borough Council and represented Katesgrove Ward from 2011- 2018.

The current government minister is Jonathan William Berry, official title Viscount Camrose, who has held the position since March 2023.

Camrose’s responsibilities include managing the Copyright Tribunal, the Office for AI, the UK IPO, Geospatial Commission, and Ordnance Survey.
