AIPPI: A welcome return to live events

In celebration of its 125th anniversary, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) has held a series of events, the culmination of which will be the finale during the 2022 World Congress in San Francisco from September 10 to 13, 2022.

After two years of hosting the Congress virtually, we will be coming together in-person again to take part in the making of AIPPI’s resolutions.

Experts from different countries and regions will be sharing and exchanging ideas on various areas of IP. We are very honoured to have Judge Marsha Berzon of the US Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit, to be our keynote speaker for the opening ceremony.

Judge Berzon has participated in many landmark intellectual property cases. She has also received the Faye Stender Award from the California Women Lawyers’ Association for her contribution to establishing the legal rights of women, among many other prestigious awards.

In view of the recent developments regarding the Unified Patent Court (UPC) system, there will be a dedicated UPC bootcamp to examine the latest updates with a separate mock trial to highlight the future framework and possible grey areas in this new judicial system.

We will continue to host our signature sessions such as the Pharma panels, bringing together top-notch practitioners in the industry to share their insights. Thought leaders from different areas of IP will be taking part in IP Lunches and leadership meetings, amongst other new features to the San Francisco Congress.

Considering the success of the virtual AIPPI Cafés in the last two years, the Standing Committees will once again identify those emerging topics for our round table discussions over a real cup of coffee.

Following the success of our inaugural online Young AIPPI Members Summit in June, our Young Members will once again be joining together, to explore and further build their network within AIPPI. The Young Members Forum provides a platform (with drinks!) to meet other colleagues from all over the world. We are very encouraged to see that 10% of our registered participants are under the age of 36.

Being an international hub of arts and culture, San Francisco never ceases to amaze its visitors. It offers a wide range of exquisite venues for our social events such as Women in AIPPI, Young Members Forum and the Cultural Evening.

The bespoke Closing Dinner will take place at The Hibernia, which was the headquarters of The Hibernia Bank built in 1892. The spectacular design of the building was referred to by the locals as “The Paragon”. During the finale dinner, we will take our members back to the 1920s so be prepared to swing!

We also understand that some of our members may still be under certain travel restrictions and the San Francisco Congress has something extra to allow virtual participation in our Study Committees meetings and Plenary Sessions.

A selection of Panel Sessions will also be made available on-demand within three months after the Congress.

We are thrilled and excited to be hosting an in-person Congress again and we look forward to seeing existing and new members in San Francisco!
