Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan
Firm overview:
Globally recognised as the largest law firm devoted solely to business litigation and arbitration, Quinn Emanuel employs over 1,000 litigators across 35 offices worldwide. “They have a lot of cases,” acknowledges a peer in the trademark industry, but the firm’s aggressive approach to handling disputes is not admired by all its counterparts. However, Quinn Emanuel’s delivery of double-digit growth in revenue and profits for the second consecutive year speaks to the steady demand for its services.
Quinn’s tenacious work ethic—and track record of success—has drawn clients including Google, IBM, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Gucci, for representation in trademark, trade dress, false advertising, and unfair competition disputes. The group leverages the firm’s deep trial resources to handle complex, precedent-setting disputes, ensuring a robust defence where the brand risk is systemic.
Team overview:
Described by a peer as “incredibly smart”, Margret Caruso chairs the firm’s Trademark & Copyright practice group from its Silicon Valley office. She brings deep experience in intellectual property litigation and appellate advocacy, encompassing trademark, copyright and unfair-competition disputes. Caruso regularly advises technology, entertainment and consumer-facing companies on complex, multi-forum matters, underscoring her central role in high-stakes brand-protection strategy. While not all peers are in agreement about her litigation style, she is admired as “an excellent, really strong litigator” who is very talented at pre-trial strategy.
Todd Anten is co-chair of the firm’s Trademark, Copyright and Trade Secret practices, focusing on high-stakes commercial and IP litigation. He handles major copyright, trademark, trade secret and false-advertising disputes, and has appeared before federal courts and the TTAB. Anten also maintains a substantial appellate practice, contributing to significant US Supreme Court and federal appellate matters. His work spans major brands across multiple industries, and he remains active in impactful pro bono and thought-leadership initiatives.
Rachel Epstein is a partner and co-chair of the firm’s Trademark, Copyright & Trade Secret practices, operating from the New York office. Her work focuses on significant trademark and copyright litigation as well as critical appellate proceedings. Epstein is considered a key figure in the firm’s brand-protection docket. She is known for steering complex commercial and IP disputes, delivering clarity and decisive outcomes for clients engaged in high-value matters.
Key matters:
- Pop Mart Americas v 7-Eleven
The firm secured a decisive temporary restraining order for Pop Mart against 7-Eleven franchisees selling counterfeit Labubu products. The court ruled in Pop Mart’s favour on all injunctive relief factors, validating the company’s IP, rejecting defendants’ “gray market” and prior cessation arguments, and protecting consumers from counterfeits.
The case is POP MART Americas Inc. et al v 7-Eleven, Inc. et al (Central District of California, 2025).
- HomeAdvisor litigation
Quinn successfully defended HomeAdvisor and IAC in a nearly decade-long putative class-action litigation seeking over $4 billion. After taking over from prior counsel, the team obtained summary judgment on equitable claims, defeated attempts to certify damages classes, and negotiated a favourable Federal Trade Commission settlement.
