UK Supreme Court appoints three new judges
Judge David Kitchin, a former member of the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office (EPO), has been named as one of three judges appointed to the UK Supreme Court.
The UK’s highest court made the announcement yesterday, June 27.
Kitchin became a judge of the English High Court in 2005, and he was appointed as a Senior Judge at the Patents Court in 2007.
From 2009 to 2011, he was a member of the EPO’s Enlarged Board of Appeal. In 2011, Kitchin was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal, responsible for the supervision of IP appeals.
Prior to joining the judiciary, Kitchin practised IP law as a barrister at 8 New Square Chambers in London.
He will commence his appointment on October 1, 2018.
Mary Arden and Philip Sales have also been appointed to the Supreme Court. Lady Justice Arden will also commence her appointment on October 1, and Lord Justice Sales will begin on January 11, 2019.
