Senate Judiciary Committee approves IPEC

The US Senate Judiciary Committee has unanimously approved the nomination of Vishal Amin as IP enforcement coordinator (IPEC).

Amin has previously served as senior counsel on the House Judiciary Committee, and was  nominated by US President Donald Trump in April.

The IPEC is responsible for coordinating the US government’s response to IP infringement, working with groups including federal agencies, law enforcement organisations and foreign governments.

The nomination will now go before the full Senate for a vote.

“IP underpins nearly every aspect of our economy,” said Amin, at his confirmation hearing. “It supports good paying jobs, it supports the arts, sciences, and technology, and it creates a framework that allows new industries and innovations to flourish.”

Frank Cullen, executive director of US IP policy at the US Chamber of Commerce, commented that the appointment will improve innovation for American investors.

“This is a targeted, practical, and comprehensive approach,” he said.

“If he is confirmed as IPEC, we believe Amin can improve the innovation environment for American inventors and creators and foster a free, fair, open marketplace for American businesses.”
