OpSec to buy Clarivate MarkMonitor brand protection business

Anti-counterfeiting and brand protection solutions company OpSec Security is to acquire the MarkMonitor brand protection business from innovation analytics company Clarivate Analytics.

In an announcement yesterday, November 5, OpSec said it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the business for an undisclosed amount. Clarivate will retain its MarkMonitor domain management business and the MarkMonitor brand name.

OpSec said that by combining MarkMonitor’s expertise with its own, it will give its customers access to an integrated end-to-end solution to “protect revenue streams, product integrity and brand reputation in a more holistic and streamlined manner”.

Richard Cremona, CEO of OpSec, said integrating MarkMonitor’s online brand protection programme into its solution portfolio “expands and strengthens OpSec’s commitment to helping brands combat the rising problems of piracy, fraud, counterfeiting and diversion for both the offline and online world”.

“Our collective expertise and industry-leading technologies will create a whole new standard and raise the bar for global brand protection,” he added.

Jerre Stead, executive chairman and CEO of Clarivate welcomed the acquisition.

"Under OpSec's new ownership and its proven commitment to innovation, we are confident that the MarkMonitor brand protection business—and its high-profile customer base—will flourish."

He added: “Streamlining our offerings will help us better serve our IP customers with innovative, integrated IP solutions across patents, trademarks, and domain registrations."

The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

At the beginning of this year, Clarivate announced it was merging with investment company Churchill Capital Corp, in a deal that values the combined company at $4.2 billion.

The companies said the new business will be called Clarivate.

In a statement at the time, Clarivate said the agreement “will open a wide range of future growth opportunities for the business and allow Clarivate to further invest in the brightest minds, game changing data science, and robust technologies”.
