Microsoft and Lenovo pair up in patent deal

Microsoft and Lenovo have agreed a partnership that will see the companies enter into a cross-licensing patent deal and enable Lenovo to carry Microsoft software on its devices.

In a deal announced on Monday, August 22, Microsoft said Lenovo will be able to load Microsoft apps—including Office, OneDrive and Skype—onto select Lenovo devices that use the Android operating system.

The “expanded collaboration” also includes a patent cross-licensing agreement that covers Lenovo and Motorola devices (Lenovo owns Motorola Mobility), though it has not been revealed what patents are included in the deal.

Nick Parker, corporate vice president, OEM division, Microsoft, said: “Microsoft’s thrilled that our productivity apps will be pre-installed on Lenovo’s premium devices.

“The marriage of Microsoft’s apps and Lenovo’s Android-based devices will enable customers around the world to be more productive, more connected and achieve even more.”

Microsoft has signed a string of licensing deals this year including with GoPro and Luna Mobile.
