LESI publishes new IP monetisation guides for SMEs

The  Licensing Executives Society International (LESI) has launched  three new guides for businesses looking to monetise their IP.

According to LESI, an international umbrella organisation of IP licensing groups, small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) typically undervalue the importance of IP and intangible assets and don’t consider them a valuable investment.

The briefings are aimed at advising businesses on the importance of their IP and how it can be effectively monetised through licensing, filling what LESI called a “crucial gap in the market”.

The group launched three documents: “Managing Your Intellectual Property”, “The Value of Intangible Assets”, and “License Your Valuable Assets”.

“It ought to be a concern that, despite the clear evidence of intangible assets being of vital importance to a modern business, so few claim to see the value in IP,” said LESI President Fiona Nicolson.

“This is precisely why these briefings are so important and, in my capacity as LESI president, it is a situation I want to fix,” added Nicolson, also a partner at  Bristows.

Don Drinkwater, licensing director at audio equipment manufacturer Bose and member of LES Canada, led the development of the IP management briefing document.

The project also featured contributions from LESI members such as Alfred Chaouat, vice president for licensing at InterDigital.

A  joint study from the European Patent Office (EPO) and European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) last year found that SMEs filing to protect their IP were more likely to become a high-growth firm.

The European Patent Office (EPO) told attendees at an  LESI conference in Dublin last November that, in general, SMEs were making “good use” of the European patent system.

A report, presented at the conference, found that high-growth European SMEs had used registered IP to commercialise two-thirds of their patented inventions.
