Kudelski settles Apple patent dispute, inks new licensing deal
The Kudelski Group has agreed a patent licensing deal with Apple, putting an end to patent litigation between the pair.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed in 2014 at the Düsseldorf District Court, where software maker OpenTV—a subsidiary of Kudelski—sued Apple for allegedly violating three of its patents directed to video streaming.
In a ruling handed down in March this year, the court backed OpenTV.
Apple was also targeted in the US in a lawsuit filed at the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Apple then challenged the patent’s validity through the US Patent and Trademark Office’s inter partes review procedure, but a ruling has not yet been issued.
Financial terms of the agreement, published on August 2, were not disclosed.
Separately, in a deal announced yesterday, August 3, Kudelski entered into a licensing agreement with patent risk management company RPX Corporation.
Under the terms of the “broad-based” deal, RPX will receive the right to provide sub-licences to a “limited number of companies” to use Kudelski-owned patents.
Kudelski will receive an upfront payment, the amount of which has not been revealed, and a future transfer of patents from RPX.
