HLK strengthens SEP practice with partner hire
The appointment of Jamie Rowlands aims to boost the firm’s standard-essential patents work and footing in the Chinese market.
HLK has added Jamie Rowlands as a partner in its London legal team.
Rowlands joins the firm after spending 20 years at Gowling WLG.
His appointment marks a significant milestone for HLK, as he becomes the first solicitor litigator in the team with comprehensive expertise in the handling of standard-essential patents (SEP)/fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) cases.
Rowlands said he was excited to join the firm due to its “combination of specialist attorneys and experienced IP lawyers” which “is particularly relevant with the introduction of the UPC as well as sector specific litigation both in the UK and internationally”.
Richard Kempner, partner and head of the legal team at HLK, said: “In relation to SEP/FRAND, we will be combining Jamie’s expertise with that of our attorneys who prosecute patents in the SEP arena to offer a true one-stop shop in this area”.
With over four years spent leading his previous firm's China office, Rowlands also brings insights into the Chinese and South East Asian markets.
HLK hopes his understanding of international relationships will further strengthen its presence in the region following the establishment of its representative office in Guangzhou in 2009.
Kemper added: “Jamie brings first hand knowledge as to how that marketplace and its legal system can be used to protect and defend our clients’ rights”
Rowlands’ representations include appearances before the Intellectual Property and Enterprise Court, High Court of England and Wales, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and the European Patent Office.
