Youth sports alliance tackles Xerox with patent suit
An alliance that provides funding for youth sports organisations has tackled printer company Xerox with a patent lawsuit.
Midwest Athletics and Sports Alliance (MASA) accused Xerox of infringing 20 patents related to printing and scanning, in a claim filed at the US District Court for the District of Nebraska on Wednesday, December 13.
The patents include US numbers 6,203,005 and 6,305,684.
Xerox was accused of infringing the patents through the sale of a range of printers, including its WorkCentre, VersaLink, Phaser, iGen, Brenva, ColorQube and Color brands, and the sale of software.
“As a result of defendant’s unlawful activities, MASA has suffered and will continue to suffer irreparable harm for which there is no adequate remedy at law,” it claimed.
MASA is seeking preliminary and permanent injunctive relief, damages, and a jury trial.
The case was assigned to District Judge Robert Rossiter.
Aside from patents, an IP issue facing Xerox is genericide.
In 2016, WIPR spoke to a counsel for the company, Margaret Walker, who said she was confident that Xerox would not suffer the same fate as other trademarks that have become generic such as ‘Zipper’ and ‘Aspirin’. She was speaking as part of a wider interview on the IP strategy at the US-based brand.
