US Department of Defense to launch new IP group
The US Department of Defense has announced plans to employ a new cadre of experts to help the department protect its technology and IP.
In a press briefing on Monday, August 26, undersecretary of defence for acquisition and sustainment, Ellen Lord, revealed the team will be up and running by October this year.
The team of experts will also address concerns on data rights.
During the conference, ostensibly aimed at providing an update on the government’s acquisitions policy, reforms and objectives, Lord told reporters the IP team will also address concerns related to China, adding that defence secretaries had spoken to President Donald Trump about the impact Chinese IP theft is having on national security, US commerce and the defence industry.
“We need to go on the offence to protect our technology versus merely acting defensively,” she said.
Additionally, Lord said one of the group’s main focus will be on the government’s partnership with industry in relation to IP.
“My experience says that typically we have problems with intellectual property when we don't clearly define what is owned by industry, and what will be owned by the government at the outset of a programme, so a lot of this really has to do with good program planning,” Lord said.
“We've leveraged a lot of work that the army has done, and we've come together as a department to establish policies that we can all work with,” she added.
Additional details about the new IP group are yet to be announced.
