US Copyright Office to host webinar on global impact of AI-generated works

Event marks latest initiative to explore legal issues raised by AI tech | Webinar to explore global perspectives on copyright in AI works | Panellists to include Jane Ginsburg.

The US Copyright Office is set to host a public webinar exploring the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on copyright law around the world.

In a statement issued yesterday, June 28, the office said the webinar will be held on July 26, 2023, 11am–1pm, eastern standard time.

The event is the office’s latest effort to examine copyright law and policy issues raised by AI technology, including the scope of copyright in works generated using AI tools and the use of copyrighted materials in AI training.

It will have an international focus because the US is not alone in facing challenging questions about AI and its implications for copyright law and policy, said the office.

During the session, international IP experts will discuss how other countries are approaching copyright questions such as authorship, training, exceptions and limitations, and infringement.

They will provide an overview of legislative developments in other regions and highlight possible areas of convergence and divergence involving generative AI.
