Simmons & Simmons launches patent prosecution practice

International law firm Simmons & Simmons has announced the establishment of a new patent prosecution group following the appointment of a patent attorney.

Kevin Cordina, who previously worked in IP at CMS Law, has joined Simmons & Simmons’ London office as a partner. As a patent attorney he specialises in telecommunications and medical devices, having previously worked as a research engineer for a telecoms company, and handles all stages of the patent process.

Cordina is qualified to represent clients at the UK Intellectual Property Office, the UK Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, and the European Patent Office. He has assisted clients from start-ups to multi-nationals who are seeking to protect their IP in Europe.

Simmons & Simmons also announced the appointment of Michael Gavey to head of IP in London. Gavey joined the firm in 2006 and has particular expertise in regulatory matters within life sciences, as well as IP transactions and IP monetisation.

The firm has over 100 IP professionals across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, having built up its IP practice for more than 40 years. The patent prosecution practice will work with the firm’s corporate and commercial practice to provide advice on IP elements of commercial transactions.

Gavey commented: “Kevin’s arrival and the launch of our patent prosecution practice represent a major development in Simmons & Simmons’ legal and sector offering. It is unusual for clients to have access to patent attorneys outside the patent and trademark attorney firms, but the launch of the new service line enables us to offer a more integrated service”.

Cordina added: “I am excited to be joining Simmons & Simmons’ highly-rated IP team to complete the range of IP services offered by the firm. Patent attorney services will fit seamlessly with the firm’s well-established IP team to provide a full-service international offering.”
