Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr welcomes new litigator
Courtland Merrill has joined Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr’s IP litigation practice as a partner.
With more than 20 years of experience as a trial lawyer, Merrill joins from Anthony Ostlund Baer & Louwagie and will be based in Minneapolis.
Merrill represents businesses in IP disputes, including claims of willful patent infringement under the doctrine of equivalents and defence of patents challenged in the inter partes review process before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Notable deals that Merrill handled before his move to the firm include winning a $1.5 million jury verdict and permanent injunction for Johnstech International in a claim against a Malaysian competitor for willful patent infringement, including an award of enhanced damages.
He also secured a $1.85 million jury verdict for Circuit Check in a claim against a competitor for willful patent infringement. In appeal before the Federal Circuit, he also won a reversal of the trial judge’s decision setting aside the jury verdict for obviousness.
Merrill also handles allegations of theft of trade secrets and enforcement of non-compete agreements and contracts. He represents medical device manufacturers, makers of consumer products and technology manufacturers.
He also has extensive experience handling business and contract disputes concerning real estate and construction projects as well as banking and lender liability issues.
