NTT Docomo joins Avanci’s IoT licensing platform
Japan’s biggest mobile phone operator, NTT Docomo, has joined Avanci’s marketplace for the licensing of patents covering ‘internet of things’ (IoT) technologies.
According to an announcement released on Tuesday, October 16, NTT Docomo will license its entire global portfolio of 2G, 3G and 4G standard-essential patents (SEPs) through Avanci’s platform.
NTT Docomo joins a host of leading telecoms players already signed up to Avanci’s marketplace, including Qualcomm, ZTE, InterDigital, and BT. The total number of patent owners now using the marketplace stands at 19.
Founded in 2016, Avanci brings together SEP owners in the wireless communications industry with companies seeking to implement the technologies for their IoT products.
“We are happy to welcome NTT Docomo into Avanci, especially since it is at the forefront of driving the evolution of wireless technology and creating the IoT.” said Kasim Alfalahi, founder and CEO of the marketplace.
He added that having one of the world’s largest mobile operators join the licensing platform demonstrates broad industry support for the “open and transparent model that Avanci brings to patent owners and IoT product manufacturers alike”.
Describing itself as Japan’s main mobile phone operator for two decades, NTT Docomo serves more than 73 million customers. The company is planning to deploy 5G networks “in the 2020s”, according to its website.
Just five days before the NTT Docomo announcement, Avanci revealed that Conversant Wireless Licensing had joined the IoT platform.
