New IP hires at Silicon Valley law firm

Hopkins & Carley hires seven amid office move | IP appointments include of counsel and associate positions.

Silicon Valley law firm  Hopkins & Carley has made a number of new appointments alongside its recent relocation from Palo Alto to Redwood City in California.

The firm has hired three of counsel attorneys, and four associates, with one from each group joining the Intellectual Property Group.

Experienced trial lawyer  Gene Cherng, who joins as of counsel, has litigated in the district courts and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

He specialises in various technologies such as network-attached storage, flash memory, computer peripherals, intelligent power distribution units, modular power supplies, display mounts and web locator services.

He has also represented clients in trade secret, copyright and trademark cases. Prior to law school, he worked for two years as a bioanalyst at Chiron Corporation.

“Gene brings a sharp analytical and technical perspective as well as formidable advocacy skills to our trial-ready team, which handles intricate IP matters in a multitude of industries,” said  John Picone, co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice.

Another addition to the IP group is  Kenny Gutierrez, who joins as an associate. Gutierrez was formerly a Bridge Fellow with the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco.

During law school, he served as a legal intern with Cisco Systems and was a summer associate at Ropes & Gray. He received his JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he was editor-in-chief of the “Science and Technology Law Journal”.

At Hastings, Gutierrez was also a student associate for the start-up Legal Garage, and won multiple awards on the Alternative Dispute Resolution team. He was also a Google Legal Summer Institute scholar, summer associate at Ropes & Gray, and legal intern at Cisco.
