Justice Kennedy to step down from US Supreme Court
Justice Anthony Kennedy of the US Supreme Court has advised US President Donald Trump that he will step down after three decades at the court.
“It has been the greatest honour and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” said Kennedy.
In a letter dated yesterday, July 27, Kennedy wrote to Trump: “For a member of the legal profession it is the highest of honours to serve on this court.”
He said that he decided to step away from his position to spend more time with his family.
Kennedy’s decision will take effect on July 31, 2018. He will then assume senior status with the Supreme Court.
Former US president Ronald Reagan nominated Kennedy to the Supreme Court.
