InterDigital and Samsung reach patent licensing agreement
US technology company InterDigital has agreed a licensing deal with Samsung, but has kept its finer details under wraps.
Delaware-based InterDigital, which owns of a portfolio of patents directed to high-speed wireless communications, announced the agreement yesterday, June 3.
The agreement covers 3G, 4G and certain wireless products sold by Samsung, a statement by InterDigital said.
The deal also sees an end to all pending litigation between the companies, including a case at the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
However, the specific terms of the agreement were not revealed by either company.
"We are very happy to have resolved the licensing dispute with Samsung on mutually agreeable terms,” said InterDigital chief executive William Merritt.
“This agreement shows how our longstanding patent licensing framework and process can lead to effective, productive discussions and eventual resolution on fair and reasonable terms."
Earlier this year, WIPR reported that InterDigital had agreed to end another patent dispute, this time with Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei.
The settlement ended a lawsuit InterDigital filed at the ITC that demanded exclusion orders which could have banned Huawei from importing potentially infringing products into the US.
Samsung, alongside Nokia and ZTE, was also targeted in the lawsuit.
Merritt added that yesterday’s agreement “underscores” the “broad portfolio of technologies” InterDigital has contributed and will continue to contribute to the technology industry.
This year, South Korea-based Samsung also announced patent licensing agreements with Google and Ericsson.
Samsung declined to comment.
