Chinese officials urge government to strengthen IP protection

Political advisers have urged the Chinese government to step up efforts to strengthen protection for rights owners in the country.

“Top political adviser” Wang Yang presided over a consultation which urged the government to enhance its IP protection policies, state news agency Xinhua  reported on Monday, January 28.

In order to continue strengthening China’s IP enforcement, officials need a greater understanding of IP rights’ creation, protection and application on the internet, Wang said.

The session canvassed suggestions from prominent figures in the private sector, including Pony Ma, CEO and founder of Shenzhen-based tech conglomerate  Tencent.

Suggestions included investing in IP protection as a university discipline, as well as creating a “talent pool” and professional IP protection team.

In the wake of increased efforts to crack down on IP infringement in China, advisers also highlighted the need to improve awareness of the issue.

In December 2018, WIPR  reported that China had unveiled a range of new punishments for IP infringement. The measures include naming IP offenders publicly, and banning them from trading property, issuing bonds or accessing state financial aid.

Speaking to WIPR at the time, Holly White, consultant at law firm Rouse, said that the policies demonstrated China’s commitment to building a “world class” IP protection system.
