UPC sunrise test period for IT system announced

Unified Patent Court announces dates for sunrise practice period in February | First registrar and deputy registrar named and judges’ training gets underway.

The Unified Patent Court (UPC) has announced dates for the sunrise practice period, ahead of its official opening on June 1 this year.

This two-week period will take place between February 13 and February 24, 2023, and the court invites external users to practise the case management system (CMS) functionalities during this time.

This test period occurs before the actual sunrise period, which is now March 1, following a delay to the original sunrise period and opening amid technical problems with the court's CMS.

According to the court, testing will be carried out in the CMS test environment, which is a copy of the CMS production environment that will be launched when the sunrise period starts.

Access to the test environment can be found from February 13 to 24 using this link.

The aim of the CMS practice period, said the UPC, is to ensure that the CMS works in a real-world context. It will allow users to test all sunrise CMS functionalities and confirm that all system components operate together and comply with legal and business requirements.

The UPC IT team will provide support to external users during this practice period. However, the UPC said users should send their requests for support using a designated contact form only.

Further details can be found in the UPC’s official announcement.

Registrar appointed

Last Monday, January 19, the UPC also announced the appointment of Alexander Ramsay as the first registrar of the UPC, with Axel Jacobi named as deputy-registrar. Both appointments were described by the UPC as “marking yet another milestone for the court”.

Advanced preparatory training for judges began on January 17 in Budapest, which was the first time that all UPC judges had the opportunity to meet.

In October, the UPC named the 85 judges who will work at the court, with Klaus Grabinski to lead the new court as President of the Court of Appeal.
