Sisvel and RPX announce Wi-Fi patent licensing deal

Patent pool operator Sisvel has announced a deal to license Wi-Fi standard essential patents (SEPs) to RPX.

The agreement was announced in a press release issued yesterday, January 10.

Under the terms of the deal, which includes patents owned by Mitsubishi and Columbia University, a subset of RPX clients will have access to the Sisvel Wi-Fi joint licensing program.

The program licenses more than 500 of Sisvel’s SEPs directed towards Wi-Fi-enabled devices on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms, the statement said.

The deal also includes 200 non-essential Wi-Fi patents owned by Hera Wireless, a subsidiary of Sisvel.

“This transaction both provides adequate returns for innovators and simple, effective, and cost-efficient access to IP rights for the implementers,” the statement said.

Mattia Fogliacco, CEO of Sisvel, said that “through this single transaction we are able to grant easy access to important technology and, at the same time, generate a fair return for the innovators”.

The deal served as an example of “how aggregators can find ways to work together to generate benefits for the whole technology ecosystem,” Fogliacco added.

RPX CEO Dan McCurdy said that the agreement demonstrated “the efficiencies of bringing companies together to create a powerful result that balances the interests of patent owners and companies that implement SEPs in their products”.

The latest deal comes off the back of a good year for Sisvel. Fogliacco, speaking to WIPR recently, described how Sisvel had secured a major deal with Samsung Electroncs.
