Pillsbury opens new IP office in Taipei
Pillsbury has opened a new Taipei-based office to focus on IP in the technology and life sciences sectors.
The new office, in the capital of Taiwan, will operate under the name Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman Foreign Legal Affairs Law Firm.
It follows the appointment of IP partners David Tsai and Christopher Kao.
Tsai and Kao, who joined the firm from Vinson & Elkins in May, will now co-lead Pillsbury’s Taiwan practice. They will split their time between Taiwan and San Francisco, as the firm has an office in Silicon Valley.
Both Tsai and Kao act as American general counsel to many clients as, according to Pillsbury, there are fewer than 50 registered foreign attorneys in Taiwan.
Tsai deals with US patent law with a focus on emerging technologies. He has expertise in matters relating to standard-essential patents, FRAND litigation, and Abbreviated New Drug Applications.
As a trial lawyer, Kao’s practice focuses on complex IP and commercial litigation. He has represented companies in industries such as computer hardware, software, telecommunications, and biotechnology.
David Dekker, chair of the firm, said that Pillsbury has been expanding its practice in Asia due to significant client demand.
He added: “Having a base in Taiwan not only helps us serve local clients; it also positions us to better support one of the world’s leading high technology markets and reinforces our stature as a sought-after firm for US-Asia cross-border work.”
