IPOS names Daren Tang’s successor
The government of Singapore has named United Nations (UN) marine law expert Rena Lee as the new chief executive of the country’s IP office, effective August 1.
She will succeed Daren Tang, who has been selected as the new director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Lee currently serves as president of the UN Intergovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.
Her other current roles include Singapore’s ambassador for oceans and law of the sea issues, as well as special envoy of the country’s minister for foreign affairs.
Stanley Lai, chairman of IPOS’ board of directors, said: “The board warmly welcomes Rena as Daren’s successor, and we look forward to working with her to take IPOS into new levels of success in growing our robust IP infrastructure to undergird the proliferation of new innovations and solutions for Singapore over the next few years.”
Tang will take up the WIPO director general job on October 1, after his nomination was confirmed by member states in May.
He saw off competition from China’s Wang Binying, whose nomination was opposed by the US.
He has served as IPOS chief executive since 2015, and has been credited by the government with helping to lead its innovation drive.
“Under his leadership we have seen Singapore’s IP ecosystem flourish and Singapore rise through the ranks to become the top in Asia for the best IP protection in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report,” said Loh Khum Yean, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Law.
“We are confident that Daren will continue to do Singapore proud, and wish him continued success as he takes on the Director General position at WIPO.”
