Gillette settles patent suit with rival

Shaving company  Gillette has settled a patent dispute surrounding three-bladed razors with Edgewell Personal Care.

In August, Gillette, a subsidiary of consumer goods company Procter & Gamble, filed a lawsuit at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York against the personal care company.

It accused Edgewell of deceptive acts, false advertising and infringement of US patent numbers 5,787,586; 5,813,293; and 5,918,369.

Approved between 1996 and 1998, the patents cover a “Replaceable shaving cartridge and a shaving razor handle”.

Edgewell manufactures men’s razors under the name Shick PL.

The labelling on the razors includes the line “Shaves as good or better than Mach3” which, according to Gillette—the manufacturer of Mach3— was false (pdf) and misleading.

However, on December 7, the suit was dismissed with prejudice. The dismissal was filed and signed by Judge Jesse Furma on December 8.

Both parties will bear their own attorneys’ fees, costs and expenses.

Gillette and Edgewell explained that the terms of the settlement are confidential, and so cannot share any further details.
