Ericsson partners with Sisvel on broadband patent pool
Swedish telecoms company Ericsson has joined a broadband patent pool covering patents related to digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, expanding its partnership with patent pool operator Sisvel.
DSL uses existing copper telephone lines to provide high-speed internet connections.
Sisvel runs a DSL licensing programme, offering a licence to a patent portfolio covering technologies under the DSL umbrella.
The new patents that Ericsson is adding to the programme cover the ‘very high digital subscriber line 2’ (VDSL2) and G.Fast technologies.
VDSL2 was an upgrade to the technology that is capable of achieving speeds which support HD streaming and voice-over-internet-protocol applications. G.Fast, which was first piloted in 2016, is capable of achieving high speeds over what are known as short “loops”.
The pool also includes patents owned by Sisvel itself.
“We are extremely proud that Ericsson has entrusted us with licensing its patents,” said Mattia Fogliacco, president of Sisvel.
Fogliacco added: “Ericsson is a very innovative company that has been continuously investing in research and development activities. The outcome is illustrated not only by the number of patents generated, but also by the significant technological value they are able to bring to the market.”
Earlier this month, Ericsson announced it was partnering with Sisvel to join a new video-coding licensing platform. Ericsson has contributed patents covering the VP9 and AV1 video codecs, which are commonly used in video streaming devices such as smartphones, TVs, and computers, to this platform.
Sisvel said it would start seeking a licence from manufacturers of devices which use the video-coding technologies this month.
