Ericsson and Oppo announce global cross-licensing deal

Swedish telecoms company  Ericsson has announced a new global patent cross-licensing deal with Chinese smartphone retailer  Oppo, covering patents from both companies’ 2G, 3G, and 4G portfolios.

A  press release issued today, February 19, said that Oppo would make ongoing royalty payments to Ericsson, “based on a substantial part” of the Chinese company’s annual sales.

Adler Feng, head of the global IP department at Oppo, said that the company looked forward to working with Ericsson in developing “cutting-edge innovation in products and services”.

Gustav Brismark, chief IP officer at Ericsson, said that the latest deal “confirms the value of our patent portfolio and further validates the Ericsson FRAND licensing program”.

“Ericsson has signed more than 100 patent license agreements to date, and we are delighted to sign a mutually beneficial agreement with Oppo”, he added.

The deal comes as the latest in a series of recent licensing agreements involving Oppo. In November, the Chinese company  announced that it had secured a licence to Finnish telecoms company Nokia’s patents. The terms of the agreement were confidential.

The agreement also comes as Oppo steps up its plans to release a 5G-enabled smartphone this year. The Ericsson deal will see the two companies collaborate on other projects involving 5G, including device testing and customer engagement, the release said.

Last November, WIPR reported Oppo’s  claims that one of its phones had successfully connected to 5G internet.
