Asia reclaims innovation crown: report
Asia has reclaimed its title as the centre for global innovation, according to a report by research company Clarivate Analytics.
The report, “ 2017 Top 100 Global Innovators”, highlights the most innovative organisations in the world and was issued yesterday, January 24.
Asia had fallen behind the US in the previous year, but reclaimed its standing in 2017 with 45 Asian companies making the list (a 15% increase over 2016).
The companies include well-established firms such Honda, Samsung and Toyota, and newcomers such as Fuji Electric and Nichia.
North America came second with 36 companies appearing on the list, including Facebook, Apple, Boeing and Microsoft.
The report tracks innovation based on an analysis of patent data from Derwent Innovation and Derwent World Patents Index.
According to Clarivate, Asian organisations outperformed the rest of the top 100 in all metrics during 2017.
The organisations featured in this year’s edition represent three continents and 11 different markets, while 85 of the top 100 this year also appeared on the 2016 report.
Clarivate added that its data indicates that while patent filings by the top 100 have increased at a slower pace than those outside the top 100 market, the top 100 have been more successful in bringing their innovations to market.
The volume of patent filings increased by 2.4% for the top 100, compared with 11.9% for global patent filings. But the number of patents granted to the top 100 grew by 5.7% year-on-year, compared with a 3.4% increase globally.
Daniel Videtto, president of IP and standards at Clarivate Analytics, said: “As the world experiences geopolitical shifts and significant economic change, the one constant that enables leaders to weather volatility is a laser focus on innovation.”
