US Senate announces Vishal Amin as IP enforcement officer
The US Senate has confirmed the appointment of Vishal Amin as the next IP Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC).
Amin will be the first person to take the role under the Trump administration. It was previously held by Daniel Marti under Barack Obama.
The IPEC is responsible for coordinating the US government’s response to IP infringement, working with groups including federal agencies, law enforcement organisations and foreign governments.
The appointment comes at a time when reports are suggesting Trump may sign a memorandum today that could potentially lead to an investigation into Chinese IP theft.
In June, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Trump’s nomination of Amin.
Amin previously served in the administration of George W Bush at the White House as associate director for domestic policy, and at the US Department of Commerce.
Bob Goodlatte, House Judiciary Committee chairman, “commended” the Senate for confirming Amin, labelling him a “valued member” of staff.
“He has helped to advance a pro-growth agenda focused on promoting emerging technologies, protecting American IP from theft and increasing competition,” he said in a statement.
He added that Amin has ensured “American innovation is protected through trade agreements”.
