Linklaters partner appointed deputy English High Court judge
A Linklaters partner who specialises in IP and technology has been appointed as a deputy High Court judge in England and Wales.
Ian Karet will serve as a judge for a six-year period, and will sit part-time in the Chancery Division for up to 30 days per year.
Karet was a member of Linklater’s partnership board from 2012 to 2015 and in 2000 founded the firm’s technology, media and telecommunications sector group.
Charlie Jacobs, senior partner at Linklaters, said: “We are delighted for Ian who is widely recognised as a leading IP disputes specialist. It’s good to see a solicitor appointed as a deputy, and we congratulate him on this significant achievement.”
Karet has led on many IP disputes, including Actavis v Merck, a leading case on the patentability of second medical uses, which set a precedent for the English Court of Appeal.
He also has experience of commercial issues including licensing, structuring IP aspects of transactions and insolvency, and is a qualified arbitrator and mediator.
