Huawei targets US defence supplier in patent suit

Huawei has filed a patent infringement suit against a US-based technology company, which sells 4G communication devices to the US military.

In a complaint filed on Friday, July 12 at the US District Court for the District of Delaware, Huawei said L3Harris Technologies was intentionally infringing five of its patents (US numbers: 7,439,969; 9,072,011; 9,655,011; 8,270,371; and 9,215,624).

L3Harris provides defence and commercial technologies to the country’s space programme, state agencies, pilots, as well as the military.

The patents in dispute cover a range of technology and methods related to navigation devices used in cars.

Huawei said a range of L3Harris’ 4G vehicle-based radios and navigation devices infringe its patent portfolio.

Additionally, it said mobile applications made by L3Harris to support the products also infringe the patents.

For example, it said L3Harris’ ‘BeOn Manual’, an application which supports its vehicle-based radios, describes the ability to perform “free form map navigation; user can pan and zoom freely”.

It said this technology was covered by its ‘969 patent.

Huawei said L3Harris was aware of Huawei’s patent portfolio. It said that in December 2018, Huawei sent L3Harris an email which identified the patents and alerted the company of its infringement.

Huawei said Harris knew of the patents “and was willfully blind” to its infringement.
