Rovi renews patent licence agreement with Samsung
Rovi, a subsidiary of global entertainment technology company TiVo, has renewed a multi-year patent licence agreement with Samsung.
TiVo announced yesterday that Rovi has signed an agreement that will allow Samsung to use its video discovery patents and technologies across its smartphone and tablet devices. These include Samsung mobile products sold worldwide.
Rovi’s executive vice president and chief IP officer, Arvin Patel, said the company is excited to build on its relationship with Samsung and add value to current and future Samsung products.
“We are proud to extend our licensing agreement with Samsung and to further enhance the consumer experience,” said Patel.
“We are excited to build on our tremendous relationship with Samsung as they continue to innovate across their smartphone and tablet product lines,” he added.
The latest announcement comes three years after TiVo sued the South Korean company, in 2015, for allegedly infringing four of its patents. In a move to settle the disputes, in November 2016, both parties signed an agreement that provided rights to TiVo’s patent portfolio for Samsung’s mobile, consumer electronic and set-top box businesses.
Earlier this year, TiVo entered a multi-year IP licensing deal with Fnac Darty, a European retailer of entertainment and leisure products, consumer electronics and household appliances. The multi-region agreement enables Fnac Darty, which operates in 11 countries, to enhance its own branded set-top box and TV products with TiVo’s patented technology.
