TiVo IP interview: binge-watching technology and gold rush mentality
“We have something of a gold rush mentality in the entertainment industry, and there’s lots of innovation throughout the entire value chain.”
That’s the opinion of Arvin Patel, chief IP officer of TiVo, in an interview with WIPR. But he’s not worried about TiVo’s future—the disruption plays right into TiVo’s “wheelhouse”, he says.
Patel thinks it’s a great time for innovators looking to break into the market, as the democratisation of content enables “anyone and everyone to become a star with a basic smartphone and an internet connection”.
While TiVo is perhaps best known for its digital video recorder, it’s now inventing next generation technology (TiVo’s ‘watch next episode’ function helps us to binge-watch TV series on Netflix).
Other next-gen technologies on which TiVo is working include multiple screen, voice recognition and metadata.
Over the past decade, TiVo has spent $2 billion on research and development, and $193 million in the past four quarters alone. The result: more than 5,000 issued and pending patents, in addition to its 750 trademarks worldwide.
According to Patel, roughly half of TiVo’s revenue stems from IP and the other half from product/solution sales. In fiscal year 2016, the company recognised around $400 million in IP licensing.
You can read more about the challenges TiVo is facing, its China strategy and the way the entertainment company deals with IP disagreements when the article is published in our January/February issue.
