IP experts head to Istanbul for AIPPI’s World Congress
Association unites members in Turkiye to debate international IP law | Event will include a UPC mock trial, discussions on SEP and FRAND licensing, and networking cafes | WIPR publishing AIPPI Congress News daily from the event.
The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) is set to commence its annual World Congress tomorrow, an event that will bring together individuals from 110 countries to Istanbul, Turkiye.
With a membership of over 8,000 individuals, AIPPI’s self-imposed mandate is to examine and debate existing national IP laws and propose measures to achieve international harmonisation.
Running from October 22-25 at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel and Conference Center, the Congress serves as a gathering open to all members, where key international IP challenges can be debated and resolutions reached.
WIPR will also be attending, as the official press partner, writing and publishing the daily World Congress News.
Study Questions up for debate
The Congress will place pending study questions concerning international law in the spotlight, with decisions reached through a consensus-based approach.
Simultaneously, the event will offer many networking opportunities with AIPPI cafes, dedicated to discussing over a dozen IP topics, running alongside panel sessions.
The study questions scheduled for this year include the doctrine of equivalents for patent infringement, the harmonisation of frameworks for copyright collecting societies, proving trademark use, and online marketplaces.
Attending the plenary sessions will provide a platform for open debates and a chance for attending AIPPI members to express their views, with resolutions determined through voting.
Once the resolutions are decided, AIPPI will begin the process of ensuring around 40 member groups, including organisations and national IP offices, adopt the proposal.
UPC mock trial
This year's Congress will also offer a mock trial and update on progress at the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
The mock trial will showcase an application for preliminary relief followed by a panel session with input from current UPC judges and industry experts.
Beyond the UPC update, the Congress agenda encompasses a broad range of topics, including discussions on regulatory reform in the European pharmaceutical sector, sessions on standard-essential patents and fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory licensing, and an exploration of the intersection of IP and the metaverse.
Additionally, the 2023 Congress features a standing committee resolution by the Pharma Standing Committee, focusing on further harmonisation of experimental use and bolar defences.
Like the study question resolutions, the experimental use resolution will be debated at a plenary session.
