USITC investigates set-top boxes after Sony complaint
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) initiated an investigation into set-top boxes yesterday, after a complaint from Sony.
Japan-based Sony filed its complaint in March, alleging that certain digital cable and satellite products, set-top boxes, gateways, and components sold by telecommunications company Arris International were infringing Sony’s patents.
The probe will target set-top boxes supplied to telecommunications business Comcast for its Xfinity brand, boxes supplied to satellite TV provider DirecTV for its Genie brand, and media or telephone gateway products.
At the same time as filing its complaint with the ITC, Sony also filed a patent infringement claim at the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division against Arris.
It alleged infringement of US patent numbers RE45,126; 6,467,093; 8,032,919; 6,556,221; and 6,915,525 through the sale of set-top boxes and other products.
The based company is seeking injunctive relief, triple damages, expenses, attorneys’ fees and a jury trial.
