Marathon buys 300 patents from Siemens
Patent monetisation company Marathon Patent Group has bought more than 300 patents from technology company Siemens.
The group has acquired two sets of portfolios making up 307 patents. One portfolio covers cellular technology and the other is related to the ‘internet of things’.
The patents cover countries including China, France, Germany, the UK and US.
Further details of the deal, revealed on August 15, have not been disclosed.
Doug Croxall, CEO of Marathon, said: “These transactions with Siemens not only materially increase our asset count but importantly they will expand Marathon’s patent licensing activity into Asia, while remaining active in both the US as well as countries in Europe.
“Many of the newly acquired assets have been declared as standard-essential patents and we intend to assert our patent rights, wherever infringed. In addition, the transaction further diversifies Marathon’s portfolio coverage into a vibrant and growing technology sector.”
In the first portfolio are 221 patents that relate to W-CDMA and GSM cellular technology. Many of the patents have been declared standard-essential.
The second portfolio, which includes 86 patents, relates to internet of things’ technology including control networks for building automation systems.
The internet of things is a proposed development in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data.
