Reed Smith hires ex-deputy AG into IP group

Reed Smith has hired a former deputy attorney general (AG) and a BakerHostetler attorney into its IP, tech and data practice group in Washington DC.

In his previous role as deputy AG for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Paul Connell directed and managed litigation for, and supervised, 110 assistant attorney generals and all cases led by the Office of the Solicitor General.

“There are few law firms, and even fewer lawyers, who focus on the state attorney general practice, and this is a clear differentiator for Reed Smith, which makes it a perfect fit for my return to private practice,” said Connell.

Aaron Lancaster, who joins as counsel from BakerHostetler, will represent clients in investigations brought by attorney generals relating to consumer protection. He will also advise clients on state and federal data privacy laws, breach response notification, and loss mitigation following data breaches.

Anthony Diana, co-chair of the firm’s IP, tech and data group, said that with the addition of Connell and Lancaster, Reed Smith is “even better positioned” to guide its clients in the future.

He added: “With uncertainty in the legal environment, particularly at the state level, clients cannot be only reactive, but need insights on where the law is developing, and how it impacts the business decisions they are making.”
