Playwright gives away new work

Mike Daisey has announced that he is going to give away the performing rights to his monologue, The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, for free.

In a blog post, the monologist said that a transcript of a performance of the monologue will be made available soon, enabling other performers to do “whatever they wish” with it.

He added: “It’s true that the transcript (it’s not a script for me) will be published. And it is true that I’m releasing it completely royalty-free.”

Daisey was also scathing of the suggestion, being made by some commentators, that by allowing others to perform his work, he could inadvertently jeopardise his own future performances.

He said that that the monologue transcript will be only one version of an ever-changing body of work that is performed. Allowing others to use the copyright of one version royalty-free would not prevent him from performing the monologue in the future.

He said: “I don’t script my monologues—I tell them extemporaneously, night after night, and refine them for the stage. But they never lock, they are never finished, and there is no script.

“Audiences care about the work that is happening in front of them, the ideas and emotions in conflict, and the way in which that catharsis can lead to change within themselves and in the world.”
