MBHB forms high-tech litigation group, hires six

McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff (MBHB) has added a team of six attorneys in Austin, Texas as it launches its transactions and high tech litigation strategy practice group.

The team, who join from Austin-based Toler Law Group, primarily represent Fortune 500 companies and institutionally-funded private companies in IP strategy and patent monetisation.

Jeffrey Toler, a registered patent attorney with over 25 years of experience in technology and related IP matters, will chair the practice group. His expertise covers a wide range of IP areas including patent acquisition and monetisation, patent brokering, inter partes reviews and opinions.

As part of the group, the lawyers will represent clients in IP litigation before the federal courts, the International Trade Commission, the US Patent and Trademark Office and in private mediation.

Grantland Drutchas, managing partner of MBHB, said: “I am excited to welcome this talented team to MBHB, which will expand our well-established IP expertise and litigation capabilities.

“With deep roots in Austin, the team also gives us access to the exciting high-tech ecosystem expanding among this area’s successful start-ups, existing technology parks and its leading research university.”

James Gauger, Benjamin Johnson, Kenton Mullins, Melissa Pace and Christopher Scurry also join the team from Toler Law Group.

Gauger has experience in all aspects of IP law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, and trade secrets. Both Johnson and Scurry focus their practices on preparation, prosecution, and litigation of patents in a variety of technology fields.

Mullins has two decades of patent-related strategic counselling, prosecution, trade secret, and licensing experience, while Pace has more than 15 years of experience in IP protection, including patent litigation and licensing, and trademark registration.

“I look forward to working closely with Grant and the MBHB litigation team to develop and implement high-value patent strategies for clients,” said Toler.

He added: “As innovation in artificial intelligence, telecoms and other leading high-tech technologies continues to evolve, our team will bring sophistication and creativity to the challenges of IP protection and litigation strategies.”
