Chen appointed to US appeals court

Raymond Chen as has been appointed as a judge at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

The appointment of Chen, who was nominated for the role by President Barack Obama in February this year for his “exceptional dedication to public service”, was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday.

Since 2008, Chen has served as deputy general counsel for IP law and solicitor for the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He has represented the agency in numerous appeals before the Federal Circuit, including arguing more than 20 cases, and has offered advice to the USPTO on legal and policy issues.

His previous roles included working in private practice with Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear LLP and at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as a technical assistant.

Chen is the 17th judge to join the court, which is overseen by chief judge Randall Rader. According to the latest available statistics (May 31, 2013), there are 969 pending cases at the court.
