Avanci launches marketplace for IoT patents

Avanci has launched a licensing marketplace for standard-essential patents (SEPs) covering wireless connectivity technology that are owned by companies active in the ‘internet of things’ (IoT).

The marketplace provider released a statement yesterday, September 14, in which it claimed that the forum, which brings together companies including Ericsson and Qualcomm with IoT device makers, is the first of its kind.

According to Avanci, entering the IoT space can be “cumbersome” for many manufacturers in relation to determining which patent licences are needed to enable connectivity and what is a “fair price”.

The marketplace provider aims to “streamline” the process by offering a single licence to patents owned by many companies on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

Further, companies can also expect a transparent, flat-rate price for each device that will vary based on the value the technology brings to the device.

Avanci is initially focusing its licensing on 2G, 3G and 4G cellular technologies for connected cars and smart meters, with plans to expand to other IoT product areas. The licence provides access to the entire standard-essential cellular patent portfolio of companies including Ericsson, Qualcomm, InterDigital and ZTE.

Licensees will have access to existing patents as well as any patents that the licensors may develop or acquire during the term of the licence.

Gustav Brismark, chief intellectual property officer at Ericsson, said: “The number of companies incorporating connectivity in their business models is rapidly increasing. By having efficient access to essential wireless technology and leveraging the global network, these companies can reduce time to market and reach scale faster.”
