Apple told to pay $7.3m for infringing Core Wireless patents

Luxembourg-based Core Wireless Licensing has been awarded $7.3 million in damages by a jury in a patent claim against Apple.

Yesterday, December 15, a California federal jury held that Apple’s iPads and iPhones infringe two patents owned by Core Wireless.

The verdict stems from a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Core Wireless in September 2014 at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division.

Core Wireless alleged Apple had infringed US patent numbers  6,477,151 (called packet radio telephone services) and  6,633,536 (called signalling in a digital mobile communications system), along with three other patents.

According to a  statement from Conversant, the parent company of Core Wireless, the patents provide innovations that improve battery life and signal quality in mobile phones.

Nokia originally owned the patents, but they were acquired by Core Wireless in September 2011.

The patents are “essential to one or more of the mobile communications standards developed or completed by” the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, including the GSM/GPRS, UMTS, and LTE standards.

The jury awarded Core Wireless $3.4 million in damages for the ‘151 patent and $3.9 million in damages for the ‘536 patent.

John Lindgren, CEO of Conversantsaid: ”We appreciate the efforts of the court and the jury. This confirms the strength of the Core Wireless portfolio, especially following our success against LG earlier this year in two cases in the Eastern District of Texas."
