IP Pages 2018: Japan country introduction
Total applications
The first table represents the total number of patent applications filed in Japan by the given firms between approximately September 2014 and August 2017. Shiga International Patent Office is a long way in front, with nearly double the applications of second-placed Itoh International Patent Office.
PCT applications
Shiga International also heads the table for PCT applications, but three of the top five firms do not make the list for total applications, perhaps indicating a greater focus on PCT in those firms. Sakai International Patent Office also makes both lists.
Referrals
Finally, we have a table that gives an indication of which firms received the largest number of referrals in the jurisdiction. That is, the number of applications filed by the given firm between the approximate period of September 2014 and August 2017, where the firm was not responsible for the originating application (in the case of national phase entry and Paris Convention applications), and where that originating application was received from Canada, US, Germany, UK, Spain, Italy, France or Korea. Shiga International makes it a hattrick of first places in this table.
The data are taken from publicly available sources – due to delays in some publications, the numbers may be less than the actual numbers of applications filed.
