‘Record year’ for WIPO patent applications as ZTE leads demand

Last year saw a “record” number of international patent applications, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), with ZTE Corporation filing the most international applications.

ZTE overtook its rival Huawei Technologies as the biggest filer of international applications, according to a release published today.

The technology company filed 4,123 patent applications last year, Huawei filed 3,692 and Qualcomm filed 2,466.

Globally, US-based applicants filed 56,595 Patent Cooperation Treaty applications last year. Japan placed second (45,239) and China was third (43,168).

WIPO said that China has posted double-digit growth each year since 2002.

For trademark applications in 2016, French cosmetics company L’Oreal placed first with 150 Madrid applications, Glaxo Group came in second with 141 and BMW had 117 applications.

The US placed first globally for international trademark applications with 7,741. Germany was second with 7,551 applications and France had 4,132.

China had 3,200 applications and saw the fastest growth (68.6%) last year.
