UPC committee says it’s too early to assess potential ‘Brexit’ fallout

The committee tasked with implementing the Unified Patent Court (UPC) has said it is too early to assess what impact the UK’s vote to leave the EU will have.

The UPC preparatory committee held its 17th preparatory committee meeting in Sweden on June 30, where ‘Brexit’ was discussed.

The committee endorsed and acknowledged that until there was more clarity about “different possible scenarios” surrounding ‘Brexit’ the implementation of the unitary patent and concurrent UPC should continue as envisaged.

In a statement, the chairmen of the committee said: “Last week’s vote in the UK in favour of leaving the EU has given rise to questions concerning the UPC and the unitary patent protection.

“At this stage it is too early to assess what the impact of the vote … eventually could be.”

The committee added that it will largely depend on political decisions to be taken in the course of the next few months.
