Unwired Planet wins third battle with Samsung and Huawei
The English High Court has handed victory to licensing company Unwired Planet in the third of five patent lawsuits with Samsung and Huawei.
In a judgment handed down today, March 22, Mr Justice Birss said Unwired Planet’s patent EP 1,230,818 was valid and infringed.
The patent relates to a method for handing over telephones from 2G to 3G and 4G networks.
Unwired Planet now leads 2-1 after three rounds of lawsuits.
In November last year, Unwired Planet won the first lawsuit before Samsung and Huawei claimed victory in the second dispute in February this year.
The overall dispute concerns the licensing company’s claim that Samsung and Huawei infringed six of its patents—five of which were obtained from Ericsson in a 2013 deal.
The court scheduled five trials to determine the validity of the patents and a sixth to rule on whether the 2013 deal broke competition law.
Gary Moss, partner at law firm EIP, which represented Unwired Planet, said: “We are succeeding in establishing that the Unwired Planet portfolio has real value and that it cannot be ignored by the implementers of the telecoms standards.”
