UKIPO launches IP enforcement research bid

The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has invited bids for research into the effectiveness of the country’s IP enforcement system.

The research will build on a commitment made in the IPO’s Enforcement Strategy, launched in May last year.

“The IPO Enforcement Strategy contains a commitment to comprehensively review all existing methods of legal recourse for IP infringement to ensure they are effective, proportionate and consistent across all IP rights,” said a spokesperson for the IPO.

As part of the strategy, the IPO wants to ensure that UK business and rights owners “continue to have the necessary legal means to protect their IP”.

The research aims to construct a snapshot of the current UK enforcement framework for each IP right, and may identify “discrete areas” where improvements or updates are necessary.

It is expected to be split into two phases.

Phase one will focus on developing evaluation criteria to assess the processes needed to enforce IP rights and the consequences of infringement.

The second phase will focus on identifying recommendations for changing the enforcement framework.

The tender process for conducting the research launched yesterday, March 13, while the deadline for receiving completed applications is April 24.
