UK and Brazil renew IP MoU

Government representatives from the UK and Brazil have renewed an intellectual property memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Liam Fox, the British secretary of state for international trade, and Marcos Pereira, the Brazilian minister for industry, foreign trade and services, witnessed the renewal of the MoU on Thursday, December 8.

The deal was signed at the Brazil Joint Economic and Trade Committee on Wednesday, December 7.

The MoU is a renewal of the relationship between the countries’ respective IP offices, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) and the UK Intellectual Property Office.

The agreement was signed on behalf of Baroness Neville-Rolfe, minister of state for energy and intellectual property, and by the INPI president, Luis Otavio Pimentel.

It will set out a commitment for the countries to co-operate on a wide range of IP issues, such as sharing best practices in IP office management and patent examination methods.

These activities will promote innovation, creativity and economic growth in the UK and Brazil.

Neville-Rolfe said: “We have built an excellent relationship with the IP office of Brazil. The mutually beneficial MoU and work plan will undoubtedly strengthen this bond.

“IP cooperation and the sharing of best practices will increase. I am certain that innovative businesses from both countries will quickly see the benefits.”
