Uber and Lyft sued for patent infringement
California-based Hailo Technologies has sued transportation companies Uber and Lyft for allegedly infringing a patent called “Automated vehicle dispatch and payment honouring system”.
The two claims, filed at the US District Court for the Central District of California on Friday, April 21, alleged that the companies had infringed US patent number 5,973,619.
The patent describes a software system that allows a method for users to pick transportation, select the number of passengers, put in a destination, obtain an estimated fare and submit a dispatch call.
“Defendant developed, develops, used, uses, sells, implements, and distributes systems and software solutions that connect users with independent private car operators for securing paid transportation,” said the claim.
It alleged that Uber’s and Lyft’s passenger software applications infringe the patent.
Hailo is seeking a jury trial, damages, costs, expenses, and pre- and post-judgment interest.

This is not the only lawsuit Uber is facing over alleged IP infringement.
Google’s former self-driving car division Waymo targeted Uber and its subsidiary Otto over alleged patent infringement and theft of trade secrets in February this year.
