Singapore and Thailand ink IP deal
Thailand has recognised the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) as a jurisdiction where business owners can file for protection under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
A Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) was reached during the fourth Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship meeting held in Bangkok on Tuesday, October 27.
The deal means that the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) in Thailand will now recognise IPOS as an International Searching Authority and an International Preliminary Examination Authority under the PCT.
Under the agreement, Thai applicants can access IPOS’s search and examination services and file for patent protection in Singapore from the DIP.
Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, director general of the DIP, said: “The newly signed MOC will enhance the bilateral collaboration between the two intellectual property offices.
“This new arrangement will allow stakeholders in the region to enjoy expedited patent application for the protection of their innovation. The exchanges of examiners would also allow both countries to forge stronger friendships and deeper understanding of our respective IP processes,” she added.
